Renewable energy

Hydroelectric power, the cornerstone of the global renewable system

The fight against climate change involves the energy sector, responsible for two thirds of the world's greenhouse gas emissions.

Hydroelectric power is the first source of renewable energy in the world, and provides approximately 70% of all global renewable electricity. Unlike other renewable sources, such as wind and solar power, which are intermittent and, therefore, unable to guarantee the constant provision of energy, hydroelectric power is the most reliable and constant source and is, therefore, an all-important element in the global transition towards renewable energy systems.

Furthermore, hydroelectric power is one of the renewable sources with the lowest unit cost, which makes this technology particularly suitable for extending access to energy in areas of the world where the majority of the population continues to remain without, such as the developing countries.

We contribute to advancing the SDGs with our hydroelectric projects

Our commitment

Webuild promotes the global fight against climate change and the transition to a low-carbon economy.

The contribution of Webuild

Webuild is one of the main players in the sector. A reliable partner of public and private customers throughout the world, it has constructed 313 plants with a total installed power of 52,900 MW.

We have completed hydroelectric projects in the most challenging contexts, from the cold Icelandic mountains to the desert climates of Africa, not to mention the rain forests of south-east Asia.

Today, we continue to be a global benchmark in the sector, operating in full compliance with international social and environmental standards

The hydroelectric projects currently under construction by the Group will enable a power of over 14,000 MW to be generated and will guarantee clean, low cost energy for tens of millions of people in the world, especially in the Horn of Africa (Ethiopia and neighbouring countries), in Central Asia (Tajikistan and neighbouring countries) and Australia, avoiding greenhouse gas emissions of approximately 13 million tons of CO2 every year.
