Completed

The Bodio and Faido lots are the two southernmost sections and will extend for approximately 30 km, of the total 57 km of the San Gotthard tunnel, which will connect the gateways of Bodio (in the canton of Ticino) and Erstfeld (in the canton of Uri) along the line of the same name between Milan and Zurich.

The excavation of the tunnel at Bodio was carried out mechanically using two open-type boring machines starting with the assembly caverns. Following the progress there are plans for a systematic consolidation operation with different type bolts and sprayed concrete.

The excavation of the multifunction station of Faido, on the other hand, was carried out using traditional methods.

The station is 1.7 kilometres long and houses the installations during the excavation stage, such as the mechanical workshops, concrete production plant, plants for the treatment and shipment of residual materials, while it will have different functions during the execution of the tunnel (rail interchange, emergency and escape lines, plant technical rooms).

The new work replaces the old railway tunnel approximately 15 kilometres long which dates back to the end of the nineteenth century.
