The "Port Sudan Road Project" called for work on a portion of the road between Khartoum and Port Sudan, in the Gedaref Port-Sudan section, which is about 760 km long, 550 km of which are involved in the rehabilitation.
The work was divided into two separate contracts, both awarded to the "Salini-Impregilo Joint Venture."

Contract No. 1
This called for two lots, the first of which between the Gedaref and Kassala junctions.
The second lot starts 2.5 km from the Kassala junction and ends in Eriba at the 140 km point of the Kassala-Haiya road.

Contract No. 2
This contract also included two lots: lot three from Eriba to approximately the Haiya junction, and lot four from there to the outskirts of Port Sudan.

The work primarily involved applying a new asphalt layer after repairing the existing pavement.
In some sections, the pavement and underlying base needed to be rebuilt, while in other sections the embankments needed to be removed and rebuilt.
The new roadway is 7 m wide; the shoulder width ranges from 1.5 m to 2.5 m.
The base thickness varies from 15 to 24 cm, while the asphalt layer thickness ranges from 4 to 13 cm.
The contracts also called for the refurbishing of 108 bridges and canals for runoff and drainage.
