The main objectives of the work were:

  • the creation of an alternative motorway road system to the Mestre ring road;ù
  • the separation of the traffic flows passing through from those of the Mestre Venice urban system;
  • reorganisation of the motorway system and ordinary road network for the Padua-Treviso-Venice area.

The new Pianiga-Quarto d’Altino route is approximately 33 km and in a very urbanised area.
The minimum size of the motorway carriageways, which include three lanes plus a hard shoulder in each direction, is 32.5 m.

The main works included in the Definitive Project are those described below:

  • 8 sections in trenches, of which 7 are partly covered, with man-made tunnels between 100 and 445 m long, with an overall development between underground and trenches of approximately 9.5 km;
  • 14 raised sections, for an overall development of approximately 22 km;
  • 4 viaducts, for an overall length of approximately 1.5 km;
  • 4 man-made tunnels constructed using prefabricated concrete structures and fixtures under the existing railway lines;
  • 4 river crossings with single span bridges (between 25 and 35 m long);
  • 14 overpasses and 16 underpasses for the motorway;
  • 3 existing watercourse siphon works;
  • 3 intermediate motorway toll booths;
  • 3 intersections and new barriers on the A4 and A27 motorways.
