This project is a part of the larger project being constructed by Autostrade per l'Italia, consisting of the upgrading of the A1 Motorway by constructing the Valico Bypass on the 62.5 km Apennine section between Sasso Marconi and Barberino del Mugello.

The construction mainly consists of the work symbolising the Valico Bypass, i.e., the Base Tunnel. This is a tunnel with divided carriageways about 8.6 km long with an average section of 180 m2. The entire section is 11.2 km long overall and entails the construction of the Base Tunnel as well as three viaducts with a mixed steel and concrete structure (Badia Nuova Viaduct, Setta I Viaduct and Casaglia Viaduct).

In addition, the Badia interchange is being built with an additional four on-ramps/off-ramps and related works for the toll booth; the Poggiolino interchange and snow area; a junction between the Poggiolino interchange and Montecarelli for which the construction of another three viaducts is included (Montecarelli, Le Bandite and Stura, also with a mixed structure of both steel and concrete and ordinary concrete and precompressed concrete).

The motorway surface works started to function on December 23, 2015. The main works were completed on December 31, 2015, while the secondary works on February 29, 2016, within 60 days as set by the Law.

Recognitions: The construction site has received numerous visitors, including international guests (Russian and Japanese) organised both by the University of Florence by the Alma Mater Studiorum in Bologna. Furthermore, site employees (both employees and workers) have received several merit awards for their efforts to improve safety on site, within the awareness-raising project "VAV Incentives for Safety."
Finally, the method for managing ventilation and firedamp gases during construction, considered a model of excellence, was presented at the National Workshop, organized by DICAM of the University of Bologna and concerning excavation techniques, held 4-5 July 2013.
