Xiaolangdi Multipurpose Dam Project
The Xiaolangdi dam is located on the Yellow River, 40 km north of Luoyang in Henan Province. It is a multipurpose structure and one the largest rock dams with a clay core in the world.
The purpose of the zoned earth and rockfill dam (154 m high, 1,667 m long with a total volume of 50,600,000 m3) is to stabilize the water flow into the lower course of the river, as well as to control the sedimentation of materials and prevent the passage of sheets of ice during the winter period. In addition to "harnessing" the river, the dam allows for water to be supplied for civilian, industrial and agricultural use, and it also produces energy through the 1,800 MW power installed capacity.
