Sogamoso Hydroelectric Project
The project is located on the Sogamoso River approximately 40 km from the town of Bucaramanga in the north-west of Colombia.
The work fits the framework of the exploitation of the country's most important water basin, that of Magdalena River, of which the river Sogamoso is an affluent.
For Colombia, the rivers that flow down from the Andes mountain range have always represented an important economic element, used for transportation, fishing and - more recently - for hydroelectric production and tourism.
The operation has involved the construction of a dam, 190 m high and 300 m long, of an underground power station that houses three turbines with a total installed power of 820 MW, of two diversion tunnels approximately 870 metres long, and the building of the system of access roads and tunnels for the underground power station.
The plant, the fourth largest in the country and inaugurated in January 2015, supplies about 10% of the country's annual energy requirement, playing an important role in generating the annual average of energy (5,056 GWh per year). In addition to contributing to the region's energy security and development of tourism, it improves the quality of life of all Santander residents and provides a real development opportunity for inhabitants of the area.
The construction of the plant lasted five years and created jobs for 7,000 people.
Awards: In 2015, the project received a recognition from the President of Colombia, from the Minister of Transport and from the President of Colombia's Engineering Society.
