MILAN, June 23, 2022 – Taking the view of a bridge as it is being built, admire a metro station still closed to the public, walk through tunnels where high-speed trains will pass, and – most of all – enter construction sites normally closed to the public where large, complex infrastructure are being built. With its “cantieri in diretta” (live construction sites) initiative, Webuild has chosen transparency and the public’s participation during the phase of construction of infrastructure to put the projects at the centre of Italy’s recovery, where work is progressing in a safe, innovative and sustainable manner. It is a communication project involving the regions of Italy that unites the country from north to south that allows everyone to follow closely Webuild’s projects and supply chain not only those directly involved.

As of today, there are 15 live webcams, installed inside construction sites across Italy, with which it is possible to follow in real time the progress of the work being done at each one of them. Of that number, 12 can be consulted on Webuild’s website (click here). Of these, four webcams are active on the construction sites of Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Nodo di Genova, the high-speed/high-capacity railway that will connect Genoa and Milan in less than an hour, serving as a growth accelerator with 2,300 businesses directly and indirectly involved and approximately 5,000 workers. Another four webcams are at constructions sites San Babila and Sant’Ambrogio of the M4 metro line in Milan, which will connect the city airport with the historic centre in a matter of minutes. Another four webcams are mounted at the sites of the Bicocca-Catenanuova railway in Sicily, which will improve connections between Palermo and Catania. There are also three live webcams at Line C in Rome, which will soon be transmitting images to Webuild’s site. Another six webcams will go live soon, two of which at the Nodo di Genova project and four at the Verona-Padua high-speed/high-capacity railway site. Everything is done in full respect of the privacy of the workers thanks to a system that avoids facial recognition.

The initiative opens up the projects to the public, thereby making them transparent, attracting the attention of aspiring engineers or just those curious to understand what happens at a construction site. It is an initiative based on Webuild’s experience during the construction of the Genova San Giorgio Bridge. Webuild was one of the first companies in the sector in the world to open its construction sites to the public. Indeed, it did it with the new bridge in Genoa, a huge testing ground for this open dialogue with the city’s residents, where six webcams were streaming live 24 hours a day, making it possible to follow the progress of the work in real time. At the same time the Spazio Ponte, an exhibition space in the heart of Genoa was open to the public to illustrate and explain the project to residents and children from schools across the city. It played a role in the launch of cultural events such as the Festival della Scienza (Science Festival), with thousands of people involved in 12 workshops about the bridge for children and adults.

The transparent construction sites are also places that are physically open to residents, bringing them closer to the infrastructure that they will use once completed. It is a successful experiment, giving the Group the opportunity to show the technology, innovation and sustainability brought to these projects. As has been done in the past, there have been open days organised at construction sites for Line 4 in Milan and the high-speed/high-capacity railway between Verona and Padua, as well as abroad on Line 16 of the Grand Paris Express.

In Italy, there are 27 large infrastructure projects that Webuild is building with a supply chain of 8,000 businesses, a big push to relaunch the Italian economy with technical and engineering marvels that, thanks to transparency initiatives, become part of the collective heritage.
