Webuild: new "Terzo Valico dei Giovi" breakthrough. Excavations over 68%

PRESS NOTES

Genoa, July 16, 2021 – A new milestone has been reached today, in the construction sites of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi. It is the most important infrastructure for sustainable mobility currently under construction in Italy. It is being built by Webuild, and is commissioned by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (FS Italiane Group).  Just a month after the first breakthrough, the Fegino construction site is the protagonist of a new breakthrough, between the Voltri interconnection tunnel (the so-called “odd-numbered” track) and a large structure in the Valico tunnel, which will be the longest in Italy, with 27 km already completed. The “even-numbered track” was completed in December 2020, and the new milestone almost completes the interconnection. The work’s overall excavations have now progressively reached 68% of the total.

The activities took place at the Fegino construction site, an important crossroad for connecting to the Port of Voltri and the Genoa Juncture (Nodo di Genova): two junctions that will allow a reduction of the road freight transport times, with goods now reaching the port from the Mediterranean and subsequent benefits in terms of CO2 reduction.

The Terzo Valico dei Giovi is one of the most important and sustainable infrastructure works currently ongoing in Italy. In fact, its construction will revive the Port of Genoa, making it an ever more functional international hub, also thanks to the interconnections to Turin, Milan and, therefore, to Europe, thus increasing Italy's overall competitiveness.  The construction itself also represents a strong impetus for the sector's recovery, and for Italy, in general. It will, in fact, involve a chain of highly specialized Italian companies employing, about 5,000 people, overall.

Webuild is currently strongly committed to the field of sustainable mobility. In Italy, after completing many high-speed railway lines, from Rome to Milan and from Milan to Turin, it is now currently carrying out 18 infrastructure projects, which are rewriting Italy's future, with a supply chain of 7,000 Italian companies involved: from the Jonica state road, the Verona-Padua high-speed/high-capacity railway line, Rome's Metro C and the Naples metro. The Group is also working on projects aimed at improving European connections, as part of the European TEN-T programme, like the Brenner Base Tunnel, which will cross the Alps, becoming the world’s longest railway tunnel, being 64 kilometres long. And also, the relevant sections of the high-speed/high-capacity railway, between Naples and Bari, and Genoa and Milan. The Group has also recently signed a mega-contract worth USD16 billion, to build the high-speed railway line between Dallas and Houston, in Texas. This revolutionary sustainable mobility project in the United States is also an opportunity to export the Group’s significant expertise in the field of sustainable high-speed mobility in the market.
