New overpass on Tortona-Alessandria State Road opens to traffic

Fundamental road link for the Terzo Valico dei Giovi project

Tortona, December 1, 2023 - The Tortona overpass reopens to traffic today. The renewed road link is preparatory to the activation of the new Rivalta-Tortona railway line, part of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi, planned by the end of the year. The road works essential for the realization of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi – Genoa Junction One Project, also continue, as per schedule, and are carried out by the General Contractor led by Webuild on behalf of Rete Ferroviaria Italiana and coordinated by Government Commissioner Calogero Mauceri.

The new railroad overpass in the Municipality of Tortona, along the State Road 10 "Padana Inferiore," represents a major artery connecting northern Italy, with a daily passage of about 25,000 vehicles and is an additional piece of the road part needed to complete the project.

The new infrastructure was built with advanced technologies, both during the design and execution phases. It has earthquake-resistant features that meet the highest European standards, both in terms of rail and road safety. The overpass is approximately 210 metres long and 12.5 meters wide. This allows the passage of the new HS/HC line underneath it. It comprises seven spans, four of which made of prestressed reinforced concrete, and three from steelwork.

The Terzo Valico dei Giovi high capacity/speed rail line, whose excavation works have exceeded 86% of the total, is a work of great construction complexity. It is composed by 70% from tunnels and extends underground for 90 kilometres in total.  The construction sites, as a whole, allowed works to be carried out on more than 30 concomitant excavation fronts, with 24/7 uninterrupted activity..
