M4 Breakthrough at Forlanini FS

Six kilometres of tunnel and €160 million in works completed
Concession agreement and financing in place
November 11, 2014 - The first tunnel of Milan's M4 metro line breakthrough took place at "Forlanini FS" train station this morning at 10 am.
Excavations began last April and to date 65% of the work for the contract for the Linate-Forlanini FS section of metro has already been completed for just over €160 million (€108 million from public funding and around €52 million from private investors) through the MM4 Consortium, which comprises Salini Impregilo, Astaldi and Ansaldo STS, AnsaldoBreda and Sirti.
As well as around 6 km of tunnels for the metro lines themselves, three metro stations (Linate, Quartiere Forlanini and Forlanini FS) and nine technical facilities (emergency exits, fire service entries, ventilation chambers, etc,) are now also nearing completion.
The overall workforce engaged in the project is around 800 people.
Meanwhile, initiatives to attract private financing – which is an essential pre-condition for the project and the execution of a concession agreement – have continued. All the steps taken so far allow us to affirm that there is no longer any reason why the financing agreement – and hence the concession agreement – cannot be signed by the end of December, as forecast and necessary.
The M4 project – for which Salini-Impregilo S.p.A. is leader of the joint venture (ATI) that was awarded the contract – involves the construction of a fully automated, driverless metro system between Linate airport and S. Cristoforo train station, Milan, with a total of 21 stops over 14.2 km of track. The entire line is expected to be operational in 88 months from the signature of the concession agreement.
