From the start of 2024, Lane has acquired and is finalising over €1 billion in new contracts
Milan, 10 December 2024 – The effort to revamp the United States highway system continues with the contribution of the Webuild Group. The Group’s U.S. subsidiary, Lane, has secured a USD 152 million (€137 million, 100% Lane) contract to enhance traffic flow on South Carolina’s Interstate 77 (I-77). This project will support the development of Scout Motors’ new manufacturing facility in Blythewood, a U.S. automotive company owned by Volkswagen.
The contract takes Lane's value for 2024, for newly acquired contracts and those being finalised, to over €1 billion. As of 30 June 2024, North America accounted for 13% of the Group's total revenue, reinforcing its role as a strategic market for infrastructure. This growth is reinforced by a modernisation plan to deliver safer, more efficient, and sustainable roads.
The new contract, commissioned by the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT), involves the design and construction of a highway system with an interchange providing access to the Scout Motors facility, which is expected to employ up to 4,000 people. This project will provide an economic boost to the region while reducing traffic congestion and improving mobility for Blythewood residents.
The core elements of the project include the construction of four bridges, access ramps, and a new east-west connecting road that will link the I-77 to US Route 21. Part of US Route 21 will be diverted and relocated to allow for the crossing of the Norfolk Southern railway, which will serve the Scout Motors facility. The project also includes the expansion of 4.8 kilometres (3 miles) of I-77 to three lanes, as well as the upgrading of existing interchanges.
