The new stations of the Western Section of Line 15 will be built according to eco-design principles, and great attention will be placed on eco-sustainability and biodiversity principles
An estimated 1,200 new jobs will be created for the project (direct and third-party)
In Autumn, Lot 2 of Line 16 is also expected to be completed, a project that is also being built by Webuild with NGE which have already completed the excavations
Milan, May 30, 2024 – A new contract for Webuild in France to build the Grand Paris Express, the new metro of the Île de France region, representing the most important and innovative sustainable mobility project in Europe at the moment. Société des grands projets awarded Webuild, in JV with its French partner NGE (representative), a €1.38 billion contract (overall amount, of which 45.5% to Webuild), to construct Lot 2 of the Western section of Line 15 of the .
This contract confirms the successful collaboration with NGE, with which the Group is also collaborating on that will be completed next Autumn. This solid partnership with NGE also extends outside French borders, with the ongoing project to build lot “Rolling Stock, Systems, Operations and Maintenance (RSSOM)” of the Ontario Line, the new fast speed line that will cross downtown Toronto, in Canada.
The new contract foresees designing and building 4 underground stations, approximately 7 kilometers of tunnels to excavate using TBMs and 6 functional structures included between the Pont de Sèvres and Saint-Denis Pleyel stations. Works will be carried out by Webuild in joint venture with NGE, Equans France and TSO.
The construction of the project will be led by the eco-design principles and those for reducing the environmental impact of works during the construction phase and when they will be used. Construction concrete with lower carbon content will be used, and more generally, materials with a low environmental impact will be chosen over others (i.e. bio-based, recycles, local and regional). Energy consumption control will be ensured with the energy recovery of the plants and technical equipment, as well as trains break and slow down, and lighting and ventilation will also be optimized. Vegetation will play a significant role for the stations, as it will guarantee biodiversity: in fact, 50% of the trees used will be native species and the roofing will include greenery.
Line 15, which with its 75 km will be France’s longest metro line, is a strategic project for Webuild, which has been present in France since the ‘90s, a nation where it aims at growing locally with premium partners and a premium supply chain. The line will circle Paris like a huge ring, with 36 stations that will cross 45 municipalities and 4 departments of the Île-de-France. 95% of the new lines will connect to the existing transport network, including Transilien services, RER, metros, tramways, and buses.
The Grand Paris Express aims at being a sustainable mobility option that will improve the life quality of the entire Paris area, also integrating the suburbs with the city centre. Overall, it foresees constructing approximately 200 kilometres of lines and 68 stations. The entire network will be built almost 90% underground and when finished it will transport more than 3 million people every day.
In France, besides the contract that has been just won and Lot 2 of Line 16 of the Grand Paris Project being completed, the Webuild Group has also already built other two projects in the metro sector: the extension of up to Orly Airport and the (Liaison Express Est-Ouest) project. The Group, in Italy, in the sustainable mobility sector, is currently building Milan's that as of today already connects Linate Airport to downtown Milan in just 12 minutes, and of Rome’s metro, which will cross the capital's city centre with museum-like stations that enhance the archaeological heritage found when works were carried out.
