Webuild Group strengthens its position in Australia, its largest international market with a backlog worth €10.4 billion at 30 June
New AU$ 1.7 billion contract for Melbourne’s Suburban Rail Loop additional contribution from the Group to sustainable mobility in Australia
Milan, 11th November 2024 – Webuild and its Australian subsidiary Clough are solidifying their position in Australia by increasing the number of infrastructure projects the Group is working on to contribute to sustainable mobility. Today, Australia is the Group’s largest international market, with a backlog worth €10.4 billion (June 2024).
The latest award of the Tunnels North package for the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East project confirms the trust placed by Australian customers in the Group and its ability to provide responsible management of complex projects, together with the world’s leading companies, and help customers transform Melbourne's public transport infrastructure in the interests of sustainability.
Ranked among the Top 5 international contractors in Australia by ENR’s 2024 ranking, Webuild has, over the years, played a key role in transferring advanced infrastructure expertise, supported by a diverse and highly specialized workforce. Currently, it is involved in 12 projects in Australia, which will be joined by the newly signed contract, providing jobs for more than 6,000 people—both direct employees and subcontracted personnel.
The Suburban Rail Loop project adds to another major infrastructure initiative the Group is advancing in Melbourne. The project is taking place in a city that is experiencing rapid growth and is projected to become Australia’s largest in the coming years. The Group is currently working on tunneling for the , a vital segment of Melbourne’s highway network. This project will connect key industrial and residential districts, significantly cutting travel times and reducing road traffic. These improvements are also expected to lower CO₂ emissions.
Among Webuild’s most significant projects in Australia is , the country’s largest renewable energy project under construction, developed by Webuild and Clough. Located in the mountains of New South Wales, the facility is a pumped hydroelectric power station capable of producing and storing energy to be released to Australian cities when needed. This contrasts with renewable energy sources such as solar or wind, which are only available under specific weather conditions. The project will therefore provide a stable energy supply for millions of Australians.
The Group is also involved in Sydney with the development of the rail line that will connect to the Western Sydney International Airport. This project will reshape the city’s public transport system and is also the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in New South Wales.
Together with Clough, the Group is also expanding into new sectors. In the Northern Territory, it is working on the construction of a ship-lifting facility at the Port of Darwin, the largest of its kind in the state. In Western Australia, the Group is building one of the world’s largest urea plants for fertilizer production and upgrading the sludge treatment process at the state’s largest wastewater treatment plant.
