Webuild: Sant’Agnese in Agone Crypt in Piazza Navona, Rome, to shine again

Artistic lighting project donated by the group to contribute to enhancing the Italian artistic heritage

Milan, January 20, 2024 – A new light will shine upon a historical and artistic jewel in the heart of Piazza Navona, in Rome: the recently restored Sant'Agnese in Agone Crypt, after almost twenty centuries, is in fact now at the very centre of a new artistic lighting and architectural project donated by the Webuild Group

The initiative, launched the day before January 21, the day when the Saint is celebrated, allowed to restore the Crypt's original and intimate atmosphere, respecting the story of the Saint's martyrdom, thanks to a complex light and shadow effect. The imposing, steeped in history St. Agnese in Agone Church is nestled between the halls and fornixes of Domitian's Stadium, standing on the site where, according to tradition, the 12-year-old Christian girl Agnese suffered martyrdom during the persecutions under the emperor Diocleziano  in 305 AD.

The lighting project created by Fabertechnica, and followed by Rome’s Special Supervisory Board, aims to enhance the spatial, architectural, and artistic features of the Crypt. It involves protecting the works that are present through the use of LED lighting, sources with zero UV and low heat emissions, in compliance with current regulations regarding user safety and the conservation of the frescoed surfaces.

The donation is part of the Group's "Agenda Cultura," the set of cultural projects promoted and organized by Webuild, following the "Superbarocco" initiative, for which Webuild last year organized its own concert event in the Church in Piazza Navona.

Webuild is carrying out 10 major infrastructure projects in Italy, working closely with the Supervisory Boards in safeguarding and enhancing archaeological assets that are discovered, just like in Rome, for the Metro C line. The project indeed represents a double challenge: an engineering one, on the one hand, but with regard to protecting the cultural and historical heritage present in Rome's city centre. For Line C, which runs through the heart of Rome, four archaeo-stations have already been planned: San Giovanni (already opened), Piazza Venezia, Porta Metronia, and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali, all designed to display and enhance the archaeological structures and artifacts found during our excavations
