Milan, June 12, 2024 – "Webuild keeps investing in training young talent, also valuing merit and creating new technical and managerial skills. Entrepreneurs must provide opportunities to the young to contribute to the Group's future growth, and to modernize the Italian infrastructural system also thanks to the PNRR (National Resilience Plan) related opportunities. These young men and women were hired during a time of huge growth at a global level that allowed the Group to hire 37,000 people globally from 2022 to 2024, of which over 10,000 people in 2024, partly already hired”.
These were the words spoken by Webuild CEO Pietro Salini during the awarding ceremony of the Third Edition of the "Premio Alberto Giovannini" for innovation and digitalization in infrastructure, promoted by Webuild and organized with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera. The award is a tribute to the Italian economist Alberto Giovannini, an academic and innovator, and once also Chairman of the Group, who left us in 2019.
“The infrastructure sector is shifting its paradigm in a way never seen before. And Webuild has raised the sector's standards through its constant investments in innovation and digitalization. And training, with 2 million training hours, in fact, provided between 2022-2023, of which over 1.3 million on Health and Safety. Innovation today is a strategic element that is fundamental for ensuring workers' safety and health, improving construction quality, and offering evermore overall performance of the infrastructure we build for our clients. Our greatest challenge for our nation is constant training, so as to be more competitive at a global level, and successfully creating the expected investments. The talents awarded today in great part come from the South of Italy, an area that Webuild is helping to modernize thanks to its ongoing 19 projects of the overall 31 main ones being built in Italy”.
This year’s young winning talents come from various Italian universities. The award was handed to them for their innovative theses and original ideas, which have proved to be both sustainable and scalable at an industrial level. And now they have been hired in the Group, in our headquarters or in one of our main ongoing projects in Italy. The Federico II University in Naples also received an award for its innovative research project based on reusing waste soil when building large infrastructure, in a circular economy perspective.
Premio Alberto Giovannini - The 2023-2024 winners by hometown
The award is a job placement programme for graduating and graduated students in Engineering, Economics, and IT, for which Webuild has made a 1 million euros investment. It truly is a way of attracting talents, creating a basin from which the Group can select its resources, even on a broader scale compared to the already awarded profiles, as has already been done during the past years. Webuild, for the next 2024-2025 edition, which was launched during today's ceremony, will provide new employment contracts and a new three-year doctorate fellowship for research linked to innovation and digitalization in the sector.
The Premio Alberto Giovannini is an integral part of Plan, a set of structured initiatives dedicated to the young to ensure training and facilitate their entrance in the construction and infrastructure sector, also concomitantly increasing the “Under 35” population numbers, currently representing 41% of the Group's direct hires.
In addition to the "Premio Alberto Giovannini", the Group is also continuing its training and employment activities with regard to "Cantiere Lavoro Italia", a plan dedicated to attracting young talents and unemployed people to create those profiles that are currently unavailable on the market.
Webuild is currently engaged in a set of activities for the young, promoting scholarships and collaborations with 18 different universities both in Italy and worldwide. Among these activities, the STEM Programmes, the UniWeLab with the University of Genoa, the Build Up programme dedicated to Technical Institutes, the scholarships with the Melbourne School of Engineering and the collaborations with the University of Technology of Sydney and the University of Queensland in Australia
