Milan, 8 August 2023 - Webuild’s large construction sites in Italy are moving forward in August. Operations continue in the North, the Centre, the South and the Islands, on the 31 major works that Webuild is carrying out in partnership with a supply chain of 10,500 companies, and a workforce of over 16,300 employees in Italy alone, including both direct and third-party personnel. Of those employed, about 9,500 are concentrated in the North and over 6,800 in the Centre and South, including the islands. A commitment to building the infrastructure as quickly as possible, together with the entire supply chain, with the women and men involved in the work, which will contribute to some of the most important sustainable mobility projects that Italy is investing in, including with PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) funding.

In the south, in Sicily, work is continuing in August on all seven sections of the Palermo-Catania-Messina railway, which Webuild is building with a supply chain of around 800 companies. In particular, on the Messina-Catania line, for the Taormina-Giampilieri and Fiumefreddo-Taormina/Letojanni sections, the clearing of ordnance and the construction of the tunnel entries and viaducts are advancing, as are the preparatory activities for the arrival, scheduled for September, of the TBM that will excavate the Sciglio Tunnel.

Also in the south, work continues on the Naples-Bari line, the high-speed, high-capacity railway that will cut travel times for people and goods between Puglia and Campania. In particular, at the construction sites of the Apice-Hirpinia section, in the province of Avellino, as scheduled, operations are currently underway for the excavation by TBM of the Grottaminarda Tunnel, one of the three tunnels to be built on the more than 18-kilometre section that will cross the Apennines. The tunnel will have an overall length of 1,990 metres. The TBM, which has a cutting head over 12 metres in diameter and is the largest currently in operation in Italy, will excavate an average of 15 metres per day in the direction of Apice, where it is expected to arrive in early 2024.

In Central Italy, on the construction sites of Line C of the Rome Metro, work is continuing on the rerouting of underground services for the Stazione Venezia areas, which started in June, in addition to the ongoing work for the T3 section (from San Giovanni to Colosseo/Fori Imperiali) with the Porta Metronia and Colosseo/Fori Imperiali stations.

In the north, on the construction sites of Line 4 of the Milan Metro, work continues on all 13 stations of the section that runs from the centre, past San Babila, to the west, arriving at San Cristoforo Station. In particular, finishing work will continue on three stations in the centre - Santa Sofia, Vetra and Sant’Ambrogio - and the lighting of the tunnel sections.

Still in the north, on the construction sites of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction, where several excavations are underway, activities are focused on the reactivation of the Facchini Tunnel, scheduled for the first half of August. The Facchini Tunnel is the first tunnel in the Node coming from the north and will allow the transit of trains carrying new-generation containers from the Port of Genoa. Still in Genoa, at the New Genoa Breakwater underwater construction site, seabed consolidation and ordnance clearing activities on the higher seabed continue, with the latter activity being carried out, for the first time in Italy, with the use of a saturation diving system.

Also underway is the “Transparent Construction Sites” initiative (click here), the first active communication project with local areas carried out in infrastructure construction sites, promoted by Webuild, which allows to follow in real time some of the main works that the Group has underway in Italy. Currently, 30 live webcams, respecting privacy, allow us to “enter” the construction sites of the Terzo Valico dei Giovi-Genoa Junction, the Metro 4 in Milan, Line C of the Rome Metro, the Verona-Padova high-speed/high-capacity line and the Bicocca-Catenanuova railway line. Other webcams will be activated soon, at the Messina-Catania high-capacity construction sites and, later, at the Naples-Bari high-speed construction sites.
