Webuild CEO Salini: "Investments in continuous training and safety to successfully build PNRR and infrastructure for the Italy of the future with entire premium supply chain"
Webuild Group ready to hire 10,000 people by 2026, with investments and training on the territory and for the supply chain
Milan, Nov. 10, 2023 – "The most important challenge for Italy is continuous training, in order to be globally competitive and to successfully realize all the investments expected in the country including those related to the PNRR, the achievement of which is confirmed every day by the high pace of the work we are sustaining. Solely in 2022, Webuild globally hired 15,000 people. Today, we plan by 2026 to hire 10,000 people whom we will have to source from the market and also train with the best skills. As a company, to quickly make up for the shortage of skilled labour, we are already implementing training plans with significant investment for a company and opening schools in the territory, starting in southern Italy. Clearly, this is an effort that we would like to share within a larger framework for creating the so called Italy System."
These were the words spoken by Webuild CEO Pietro Salini at the XXIII National Conference of Young Construction Contractors (XXIII Convegno Nazionale Giovani Imprenditori Edili), an opportunity to reflect on the value of skills for the future of construction and the evolution that the sector is experiencing in Italy. A development that must consider several key aspects, including occupational safety training. "The works being built by us in Italy prove the strength of a systemic approach, which we must also aim to standardize and adopt for the future, with an integrated premium supply chain model to increase global competitiveness, focusing on innovation, sustainability and safety. Webuild has carried out nearly 2 million hours of training in 2020-2022, globally, and for safety training alone 1.4 million hours of training for direct and third-party employees. Recruitment and training are indeed strategic for Italy's infrastructure development plan, to continue at a fast pace."
Salini stressed that for a company "being larger means having more resources, in terms of finance and human capital. It means having the ability to make R&D and new technology investments to improve safety and efficiency levels. Still, a dream is also needed to grow, a strong industrial idea and project, the determination to achieve it, and a team of motivated and competent men and women. These elements have allowed our Group to become what it is today, the most recent chapter in its over 100-year history," Salini continued. “We propel ourselves into the future by designing and implementing major works that make the sustainable growth of territories a reality. Today, we are present in more than 50 countries with 85,000 people and 150 ongoing projects. In Italy alone, we have 31 major ongoing works, with 16,300 people at work, including direct and third-party personnel, and 10,500 suppliers involved from when works began to date. Still, a decade ago we were much smaller. We believed in a dream, and in just ten years we have created a reality that can compete with construction giants globally, driving the growth of the industry in Italy with the entire supply chain."
