Lane (Webuild Group) is constructing $152 million contract to transform the region's highway system

The project will ensure direct access to the to-be manufacturing facility that will produce Scout Motors electric vehicles that will give work to 4,000 people

Milan, February 27, 2025 – Works begin to construct the I-77 Interchange highway project, a $152 million contract assigned last December to Lane, the Webuild US subsidiary, by South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT). The project is a fundamental step for the infrastructural and economic development of the region, as it will ensure direct access to the to-be plant that will produce electric vehicles made by Scout Motors, Inc. (Volkswagen Group) at Blythewood, a reference plant for the sector that will create up to 4,000 new jobs, guiding a significant economic growth for the area involved.

These contractual works aim at supporting the growing regional transport needs, concomitantly improving viability and reducing traffic. The project includes building a system with 4 new bridges and ramps to streamline traffic flow, a new east-west road to link Exit 26 to US 21 (highway), a realignment of US 21 to accommodate a grade-separated Norfolk Southern rail spur, an expansion of I-77 northbound lanes for improved capacity and efficiency, and interchange upgrades to optimize local and regional travel. The activities will be carried out with minimal disruption to the territory and community.

Webuild, with Lane, boasts a solid experience in the US, where it works with institutions to upgrade the US road and highway network. The Group, in this sector, in the US, is currently engaged in projects like upgrading the I-275/I-4 Downtown Interchange at Tampa, in Florida, and the I-77/I-40 Interchange in the Iredell County, North Carolina. Lane, in South Carolina, is working on the I-77 Interchange project while also building and upgrading the I-20 Bridges over the Wateree River and other infrastructure linked to Kershaw County.
