Webuild: Tajik President visits Rogun construction site, the world’s highest dam

Construction of the plant that will double the country’s power generation capacity is proceeding swiftly, with 30% work done

Rogun (Tajikistan), 11 August 2023 - Work on the construction of Lot 2 of the Rogun Hydroelectric Plant in Tajikistan is progressing swiftly and has reached approximately 30% of completion. This is what the Tajik President, His Excellency Emomali Rahmon, was able to observe during a visit to the construction site for the world’s highest dam, which will double the country’s power generation capacity. The Webuild Group is constructing Lot 2 of the work on behalf of the government company Rogun HPP.

The plant is being built in Rogun, on the bed of the Vakhsh River, about 90 kilometres from the capital, Dushanbe. The dam is rockfill with a clay core material. The dam, which will have a total volume of about 80 million cubic metres, will be 335 metres high with a crest length of 800 metres. To date, 20 million cubic metres have been built and the foundation work on the dam is nearing substantial completion.

When completed, the Rogun plant will have a total installed capacity of 3,600MW, provided by six 600MW Francis turbines. The plant will enable Tajikistan to meet the growing domestic power demand, particularly during the winter months, and to contribute to the needs of neighbouring countries. Between 2018 and 2019, the first two turbines were activated, thanks to the construction of a first phase of the partial section dam.

The Rogun project confirms the Webuild Group’s global leadership in the water sector, where it is active in the entire water cycle, from supply for drinking and irrigation purposes to the final treatment of waste water. With its subsidiary Fisia Italimpianti, it is a world leader in sustainable design and construction of water treatment and desalination plants. Among the completed works is the Lake Mead Hydraulic Tunnel No. 3, built to supply the city of Las Vegas and the surrounding areas through a complex system of drawing and transporting water from Lake Mead. Currently, the Group has major projects underway such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, the largest hydroelectric plant in Africa, which Webuild is constructing on the waters of the Blue Nile in Ethiopia, and Snowy 2.0, the largest ongoing renewable energy project in Australia. In South America, it is implementing the Riachuelo project in Argentina, for the construction of a hydraulic tunnel and wastewater treatment plant in Buenos Aires.
