CNN: power to Africa
July 18, 2016 – New mega renewable energy projects in Africa in response to the growing demand for electricity: that is the topic of an article posted on Africa View, a section of CNN’s website dedicated to news from the continent. Two of the projects highlighted by the article involve Salini Impregilo.
With an expected doubling of the population by 2050 and massive investments being made in renewable energy, Africa stands to become a superpower in the sector.
Projects like Gibe III in Ethiopia and Ingula in South Africa are among those cited as examples of how the most innovative technology can help accelerate growth on the continent.
"What is amazing about Africa is that they have these incredible case examples, some of the biggest in the world," Caroline Kende-Robb, executive director of Africa Progress Panel is quoted as saying in the article, entitled “The clean energy megaprojects powering Africa”.
Kende-Robb says Africa could become the place where other parts of the world come to look for expertise in renewable energy.
Located 300 kilometres from the capital of Addis Abeba, Gibe III will produce about 1,870 MW by taking advantage of the force of the Omo River. It is one of the largest of its kind on the continent.
Ingula is about 350 kilometres from Johannesburg between KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces. It has a power plant and a pumping mechanism with a production capacity of up to 1,332 MW. It has started producing electricity and once it reaches full capacity it will be one of the largest in Africa in terms of power generating capacity.
