Webuild Ceo Salini: Metro C Line a crucial project for Rome

Start Of Works On Venezia Station Serves As Example To World Of Infrastructure Development And The Safeguarding Of Archeological Heritage

ROME, June 22, 2023 – “As a Roman and a businessman, I am very proud to be here today to celebrate the start of works on the Venezia Station for the Metro C of Rome, a project that already has 22 stations in operation. It serves as a unique opportunity for the city, to help Rome grow by combining the promotion of its heritage with a vision of the future of Rome towards 2030. A projection of one of the world’s greatest cities with one of best qualities of life. We have to immagine today what will be the Rome of the future. In this context, we have to look at the projects that will enable us to create an indispensable interconnection between the centre and the periphery even if it means causing a bit of disruption to city life that is inevitable during their construction. We have to have the courage and the ambition to develop again infrastructure in this city – like this one – so that it can return to being one of the best cities in which to live, a smart city managed with advanced technology, sustainable, and on a human scale,” said Pietro Salini at a ceremony held at Piazza Venezia in Rome for the laying of the first stone of the new station in the presence of Italian Infrastructure and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini and Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.

“We are building Line C with our partners in the Metro C Consortium, and we are together bringing the best expertise in the sector not only in terms of engineering capacity but also in terms of managerial capacity acquired from the most complex projects in the world, which are crucial for the construction of a line that crosses heavily built areas with a stratification of archeological relics that need to be safeguarded,” Salini said.

“Our company alone has done more than 800 kilometres of metro lines in the world in the most varied of places and conditions: from New York to San Francisco, from Paris to Athens and Copenhagen, from Doha to Riyadh. In Italy, it has worked on all the metro lines of Milan and all the lines in Rome. Despite our strong presence on large and complex projects, which are Webuild Group’s specialty, our share of the internal market in construction in Italy in 2022 was equal to 1.3 percent. Many of our direct European competitors in France, Spain and Germany have much larger shares in their domestic markets, up to 10 percent,” he said.

The great infrastructure project that we need to develop in this city is called sustainable mobility and urban renewal. The work on this infrastructure will allow cities throughout the world to deal with the epochal changes that are occurring now. By 2050, they are to host more than 80 percent of the world’s population. This trend needs to be managed. We need not succumb to it. Roads, metro lines and work on urban renewal – especially in the periphery – will allow cities of the future to grow and improve the quality of the lives of their residents.”
