Webuild wins ITA Award for its Tunneling expertise in Anacostia River Tunnel project, Washington D.C.
Milan, November 21, 2017 – Salini Impregilo has won an award from the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association (ITA-AITES), the leading international organization promoting the use of tunnels and underground space for sustainable development through knowledge sharing and the application of technology.
At the third edition of the annual ITA Tunnelling Awards 2017 ceremony in Paris, Salini Impregilo received the Sustainability Initiative of the Yearaward for the Anacostia River Tunnel in Washington, D.C., the latest acknowledgement of its expertise in excavating tunnels in the water and transport segments of the infrastructure industry.
The Anacostia River Tunnel will control combined sewer overflows and help improve the water quality of Washington D.C.’s waterways. Recipient of other awards, it is a major component of the District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority’s $2.6 billion Clean Rivers Project, a massive infrastructure and support program designed to capture and clean wastewater during rainfalls. When the entire program is completed, it will reduce combined sewage overflows to Washington D.C.’s rivers and streams by 96 percent. Salini Impregilo bored the tunnel with a diameter of seven metres for 3.8 kilometres under many sensitive structures including; 100-year old sewers, a railway, the Anacostia River, highways, and a major subway line. It recently won another contract related to the program: the $580 million construction of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel, which will connect to the Anacostia River Tunnel and provide additional combined sewer storage volume needed to meet water quality goals.
