Symphonic orchestra. Genoa’s new bridge: a masterpiece.

Genoa San Giorgio Bridge, Italy

It is the product of choir singing in harmony, a masterpiece in technique, a model to replicate elsewhere in the infrastructure sector….

Many are the descriptions given to the Genoa San Giorgio Bridge, built in a mere 450 days after the August 2018 collapse of the Morandi Bridge. And much is the admiration of the commitment displayed by the 1,000 people led by Webuild and Fincantieri who contributed to its construction. Workers from more than 40 trades, all working together like members of a symphonic orchestra able to perform in perfect harmony.

A work of art made of steel and concrete, its 18 piles standing up for 90 metres, 50 of which underground. The bridge is the result of a fortuitous combination of innovation and sustainability. The elliptical shape of the piles allows for the light to slide off their surface. It also limits their visual impact within an urban context. From the first sketches of its design to the final installment of the technological gear inside the deck, every member of the orchestra did his or her part, working day and night, on one of three shifts of eight hours each.

There were also experts on hand, for the treatment of rainwater, the installation of dehumidifiers, and the setting of sensors to monitor the state of the structure with the help of robots that keep the solar panels clean.

A project that definitely deserves a standing ovation!
