Genoa’s new breakwater: fourth caisson installed

Relentlessly moving forward at the offshore construction site

Genoa, August 25, 2024 – Work on Genoa's new breakwater has advanced even throughout August, with the installation of the fourth caisson off the city’s coast. The PerGenova Breakwater Consortium, led by Webuild, plans to install a total of 12 caissons— including those already placed—along the perimeter of the new breakwater by the end of the year.

The fourth caisson, one of 90 planned for the initial 4 kilometers of the breakwater's total 6-kilometer length, was constructed at the floating shipyards in Vado Ligure. It measures 21.7 meters in height, 40 meters in length and 25 meters in wide, with a weight of approximately 10,000 tons. These concrete giants, as large as palaces, will be placed side by side on the seabed in front of the Ligurian city.

To date, about 9,100 submerged columns have been constructed for seafloor consolidation, including more than 800 completed in just the last two weeks. A total of more than 1.7 million tons of gravel material was poured for the columns.

The new breakwater will enable ships up to 400 meters in length to enter the port of Genoa. The project, managed by a consortium led by Webuild (40%), with Fincantieri Infrastructure (25%), Fincosit (25%), and Sidra (10%), currently employs 230 direct and third-party workers. It is expected to involve around 1,000 people in total, with over 130 companies engaged from the outset.

The Genoa New Breakwater is one of 31 major Webuild construction sites across Italy, from north to south, that has remained active throughout August. These sites are crucial for advancing strategic projects and supporting the country’s investment in infrastructural and sustainable development. In Italy, the Group employs around 17,700 people, including both direct and third-party staff, and collaborates with a supply chain of 10,500 companies.
